Some of the world's most coveted trainers and streetwear labels are sold by a business that started life on a cobbled Newcastle street. END. was founded in 2005 by Christiaan Ashworth and John Parker as a two-storey independent boutique on High Bridge Street, aiming to bring fashion, design, music and art together.

Its curation set it apart from the start. Alongside streetwear staples, the shop stocked labels such as the Japanese brand visvim at a time when that kind of mix was a novel idea, and certainly a bold one outside London. Callum Hill, now senior collaborations design manager at END., remembers shopping there at 16 and spending his Education Maintenance Allowance on a Stüssy jumper. "END. always had that Northern warmth," he told Highsnobiety.

Growth followed. In 2015 the Newcastle store moved to a larger flagship on Grainger Street, and the latest Newcastle flagship, opened in 2021, is a three-storey store in a Grade II listed building. Stores followed in Glasgow, London, Manchester and, in 2024, Milan, and the website now attracts around 10 million unique visitors a month.

In 2025 END. celebrated its 20th anniversary with a year of collaborations designed to honour its North East roots and British culture. The British coastline came first, inspired by fish and chip shops, arcades and beach outings, followed by the corner shop in the summer and the British pub towards the end of the year. Partners included adidas Originals, Salomon, Crocs, Aries, ASICS, C.P. Company, Stone Island and PUMA.

The anniversary year ended with something entirely new. On 14 September 2025 the retailer launched END. Label, its first own brand, across its UK stores in London, Newcastle, Manchester and Glasgow, with menswear, womenswear, accessories and jewellery. The campaign cast included the Newcastle-born jazz group Knats.

From a single shop to an international name, END. remains one of the great Newcastle retail success stories, and its Grainger Street flagship is still a destination for anyone who loves clothes.
